How Does Gastric Sleeve Cause You to Lose Weight?
Gastric sleeve is a two-fold procedure as it not only changes how much food a person is able to hold, but how much food a person wants, both which help to induce weight loss.
- Since your stomach is now smaller in size then it was before, you now feel satisfied (full) with smaller amounts of food.
- Ghrelin, which is known as the hunger hormone, is mainly produced in the stomach, especially in the portion of the stomach that gets removed during sleeve gastrectomy. Normally in between meals when the stomach is empty, ghrelin is produced and signals are sent to the brain to give us the urge to eat. By removing a large concentration of ghrelin, which is what happens after gastric sleeve surgery, you can wait longer in between meals before feeling the need to eat again, and you also feel satisfied with less amounts of food.
The gastric sleeve surgery is permanent, but it does not affect anything critical as to how the stomach naturally works. The surgery has minimum effects on the digestive process, which reduces the risk of malabsorption complications, which can be seen in other types of bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass.
How is Gastric Sleeve Performed?
The surgeon(s) enter the stomach laparoscopically using trocars. A camera is inserted through one of the trocars, this allows them to have a visual of the stomach through a video monitor and to precisely guide other instruments. Other instruments are then inserted through the other trocars for the removal and stapling of the stomach.
They remove 75-80% of the original stomach, leaving a sleeve-like portion, very similar looking to a banana. The connections to your esophagus and small intestines are left intact.

A Glimpse into Gastric Sleeve Recovery
Directly after surgery you will need to stay overnight at Clinic 360. For the first week you will be on a liquid only diet, with restriction as to what you can and cannot consume. This is why you meet with a nutritionist weeks before your surgery in preparation for this phase. The next day you will be discharged and sent home. For the next couple of weeks you will be consuming liquid to blended foods, to settle your stomach. Once you reach the 2 month mark you can progress to a regular diet as tolerated with restrictions to portion sizes.
It will take up to 18 months to lose the expected weight. Most patients lose about 60%-70% of their excess weight. You will lose weight rapidly after the first few months and this loss will most likely plateau. This is expected; however don’t let this discourage you from losing the rest of your weight. Plateauing is just a way of your body getting used to the grand change it has undergone. There are many ways to overcome this such as adding in a new external change to your exercise regime.
Knowledge and preparation of the gastric sleeve surgery are two great ways to help you with the success of the procedure and to changing your life for the better. At Clinic 360, we are here to help you every step of the way!
