Clitoral Unhooding
Clitoral unhooding, also known as clitoral hood reduction, is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue around the clitoris to enhance sensitivity and improve aesthetics. Some women naturally have a thicker or elongated clitoral hood, which can reduce sexual stimulation or cause discomfort. At Clinic 360, Dr. Giannoulias specializes in clitoral unhooding, offering a precise and personalized approach to help patients achieve greater comfort and confidence.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Clitoral Unhooding?
Clitoral unhooding, also known as hoodectomy or clitoral circumcision, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce excess prepuce tissue covering the clitoris. Women often choose this procedure to enhance sexual sensation or relieve discomfort caused by an enlarged clitoral hood. Excess tissue can sometimes create friction against clothing, leading to irritation or discomfort during physical activities.
Before considering surgery, a thorough consultation is essential. In some cases, sexual dissatisfaction may stem from hormonal imbalances, which can be treated non-surgically with hormone therapy. If clitoral unhooding is determined to be the best option, Dr. G will assess how much tissue should be safely removed to achieve optimal results while preserving natural function. Since excess removal cannot be reversed, precision and expertise are key to achieving a balanced, natural outcome.
How is a Clitoral Unhooding Performed?
Dr. Giannoulias begins the procedure by applying a topical anesthetic ointment to numb the area, ensuring a comfortable experience. A specialized fluid may also be used to constrict blood vessels, minimizing bleeding during surgery.
The technique used for unhooding varies based on individual anatomy and Dr. G’s expert approach. A common method involves removing small amounts of prepuce tissue on either side of the clitoris and carefully repositioning it within the natural crease between the clitoris and labia minora, maintaining a natural appearance. In many cases, a laser is used to achieve precise tissue removal with minimal trauma to the surrounding area.
Since the procedure targets a small area and involves minimal tissue removal, surgery typically takes about an hour. It is often performed under local anesthesia, allowing patients to remain awake and provide feedback if needed. This approach helps ensure optimal results while keeping the patient as comfortable as possible.
Recovery Time
Recovery from clitoral unhooding is typically quick and straightforward, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort. Mild swelling, bruising, and sensitivity in the treated area are normal in the first few days but gradually subside. Over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses can help manage any discomfort.
Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, tight clothing, and direct pressure on the area for at least one to two weeks to promote proper healing. It’s also essential to keep the area clean and follow Dr. Giannoulias’ post-operative care instructions to prevent infection and ensure a smooth recovery.
Most patients can return to work and light activities within a few days, but sexual activity and intense physical exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks to allow for full healing. Dr. G will provide personalized guidance based on your progress during follow-up appointments.
Combining Labiaplasty with a Hoodectomy
Many women who undergo labiaplasty (the shortening of the inner and/or outer vaginal lips) often notice that the clitoral hood becomes more pronounced, making them consider clitoral unhooding as well. Combining both procedures allows for a more balanced and harmonious result. Typically, having both surgeries performed together will take about three hours.
Like with a standalone clitoral unhooding, the procedures can be done under local anesthesia, though many patients prefer general anesthesia to remain fully comfortable and relaxed throughout the process.
You will be able to return home on the same day after the procedure, and Dr. Giannoulias will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
